Finger Lakes Wine Festival

April 28th, 2009 0 Comments

Wine enthusiasts coming to the annual Finger Lakes Wine Festival in Watkins Glen, NY this year can make more out of their trip by visiting some non-wine destinations. Here are three quick trips to put into that weekend’s itinerary provided by Online SMS –

-          Ithaca, NY – Home to Cornell University, Ithaca College, 150 or more waterfalls, and more restaurants per person than New York City, Ithaca (www.visitithaca.com) is worth the 20-mile drive between Seneca and Cayuga Lakes. Have lunch downtown on The Commons and then climb Cascadilla Gorge (http://nyfalls.com/cascadilla.html) to the Cornell Campus (www.cornell.edu). If you have any energy left, climb the bell tower for a great view of the lake; if you are too tired, take the elevator in the Johnson Art Museum.

-          Corning, NY – One of America’s top arts towns, Corning visitors can make their own glass at the Corning Museum of Glass (www.cmog.org) and then drink a toast from it in one of the top restaurants in the Gaffer District (http://www.gafferdistrict.com).

-          Elmira, NY – A beautiful small city laid out along the Chemung River, Elmira is the “Soaring Capital of America.” Visitors can drive to the top of Harris Hill and soar soundlessly at the controls of a glider (http://www.harrishillsoaring.org/ ); they can also Mark Twain’s summer home and the study where he wrote “A Tramp Abroad,” “Life on the Mississippi,” “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” “The Prince and the Pauper,” and “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” (http://www.marktwaincountry.com/).

The Finger Lakes wines are world-class, and so are the area’s restaurants and local food – all packaged in a romantic landscape of deep blue lakes, rolling green hills, and plunging cool waterfalls tucked into winding gorges. Families come for a peaceful summer’s week on the lakes; couples enjoy the wineries, small cities, history, arts and restaurants, and everyone flocks to Watkins Glen for racing, Ithaca for the Grassroots Festival, Rochester for Jazz, Elmira for soaring, and everywhere for the calm, cool class of the Finger Lakes.
